The Dances of
Sybil Shearer on Film

Tom Jaremba

The Dances of Sybil Shearer on Film by Helen Balfour Morrison were shown at the new Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies on Chicago's Michigan avenue, recognized for its forward-looking design. The event inaugurated the publication of the Shearer autobiography, Within This Thicket. Featured were signature dances such as In A Vacuum along with rare footage of the artist dancing on the hills outside her home and studio in Northbrook, Illinois.

Mary Sue Glosser, whose acclaimed talks at The Art Institute of Chicago have converted many to the joys of the arts, combined readings from Within This Thicket and anecdotes from her long association with Sybil Shearer. Carol Doty, Chairman of the Board, explained the mission of the Morrison-Shearer Foundation.

The Midwest Inheritance, tracing Shearer's national concert career, the artistic collaboration of the founders and the Sybil Shearer Dance Company, will be published in 2011.
